I stopped hunting the Walden area Ed. I always loved the SMB area due to the vastness and nice deer. Over the years there seemed to be less and less deer around there and when I got home from camp I normally got my buck in the flat lands of the Islands. One of the problems in the Caledonia County portion of the state is many of the softwood winter areas have been logged out. A chain saw is a deer's best friend but instead of taking sterile hardwoods like they used to they seem to focus on the softwood swamps and target softwood trees. I am not necessarily talking about SMB which still has good winter habitat but the areas closer to Hardwick where my camp was has been really logged off. Small parcels here and there all add up. Winters are tough up in that part of the state and the deer need all the winter yards to remain intact.
